Help provide deaf children the access to education that they deserve

“The Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) said: ‘The believers in their affection, compassion and love for one another are like one single body. If one part of it hurts, the whole body hurts.’” - [Sahih Muslim]

Pakistan has a community of over one million school-aged deaf children. These deaf children have struggles that we can't even begin to imagine unless we are in their situation.

Imagine if you were a deaf 10 year old. You already struggle to communicate with your family and your friends. You have to live with the reality that your parents can't afford to put you into a school where you'll thrive. You're stuck. Without proper education, you or your family won't have a chance at a better life.

Remember that in our affection, compassion, and love for another...we are like a single body. If one part of it hurts, the whole body hurts. Our young brothers and sisters --- children --- are hurting. We need to help them.

Pakistan has more than 1 million deaf children of school age, less than 5 percent of them attend school.

Just imagine that. Less than 5%! The majority of these deaf children in Pakistan are from extremely impoverished households with very limited access to education. Children with deafness and hearing loss are even more vulnerable now that schools are closed because of the global pandemic. They are isolated at home and unable to access information.

Think about your own child, your brother, your sister, your neighbour, or even a student of yours. You would want them to have every resource available to help them succeed in life and flourish. You want them to reach their highest potential.

These children, they need care, love, attention, professional Early intervention. They need not to be forgotten. Unfortunately, in impoverished places like these, deaf children are forgotten just like many other children. A child does not understand that they are being disregarded. They grow up thinking this is their fate. And it is the reality for many children in Pakistan.

But my dear brothers and sisters, why must it be this way? These are the innocent we must protect. So, let's take responsibility for them like we would our own. Start with the smallest act we can do by opening our hearts and donating to this foundation.

We could make it so that these children are remembered. They need adults like us to guide them, show them, and make them feel they can accomplish their dreams and aspirations; like all children should have the opportunity to do. But it starts with our donations; our hearts.

Only 20% of deaf families have access to the internet, which means that 80% are not able to access digital resources.

Deaf Reach is a network of schools across Pakistan founded and managed by the Family Educational Services Foundation (FESF). Currently, they provide tuition to 1200 students.

To mitigate this problem of not being able to access digital resources, Deaf Reach developed a purpose-built platform that provides access to those with little to no access to the Internet or devices.

They provide video lessons in sign language (from studio), deliver laptops and USBs with new content, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and partners to provide games and reading materials via their fleet of mini-buses, and offer psych-social support to their deaf students.

Furthermore, the well-being of their students is a priority as well. Just as you may have been dealing with issues of anxiety and social isolation, many students, including deaf students, are too. So they've partnered with a mental health organization that supports their children's medical and mental health.

They are gamifying new learning content and addressing anxiety and social isolation by partnering with DeafKidz International.

It is important that our children have the appropriate equipment.

“I love going to Deaf Reach because everyone speaks my language and understands how I feel and what I am trying to say. It has been [many] months since the lockdown started. I have not seen my teachers and not been able to attend school with my friends. I started to fear that I will forget our sign language. We got laptops with all the lessons and exercises, now I am studying at home ... The school year will not be wasted." -  Iqbal.

Deaf Reach's remote learning project aims to provide uninterrupted education to deaf students until they can resume learning in their classrooms.

Through our partnership with Deaf Reach in Pakistan, Humaniti is on a mission to enable deaf children and their families to overcome the developmental barriers they face and receive the specialized education they deserve so that they can experience an improved quality of life.

We can give them hope. You can help us give them a bright future to fulfill their dreams.

Additionally, Deaf Reach provides transportation services to deaf students within a 50KM radius of each school. Without this, many children - particularly in rural areas - would not be able to attend school.

Deaf Reach follows Pakistan's national curriculum, and draws best practices from deaf institutions across the globe.

Education improves lives, breaks the cycle of poverty and ensures that all children, particularly girls, are empowered.

Our vision is to make education a reality for deaf children across Pakistan, and show the world that the deaf can do anything if given the opportunity.
